NAGLER, Georg K
Die Monogrammisten. Fortgesetzt von A. Andresen und C. Clauss. München, 1858-1879 and 1920 (index). Fourth reprint 1991, 8vo. Cloth. With over 30.000 monogram facsimiles. 5 volumes (the index bound at the end of the fifth volume). XXVIII, 1088 + 1121 + IV, 1143 + 1155 + 436 + (Index) IV, 109 pp
An unsurpassed reference work of permanent value, to identify artists who sign themselves only by their monogram or similar device. Literally thousands of them were book illustrators, hence the work's importance for books. Nagler begins by giving an exact facsimile of the monogram(s); this is followed by the artist's name, his biography and then a list of his works, frequently including a complete bibliography of books illustrated by him. Arrangement is alphabetical. The total number of main entries is 14.961; the number of monogram facsimiles must be well over 30.000.

RIENZO, Pasquale di|WITTOCK, Michel
Bodoni: quand la simplicité devient art. Bruxelles, HES & DE GRAAF Publishers, 2000. 4to. Wrappers. Illustrated. 160 pp
Exposition organisée à la Bibliotheca Wittockiana du 17 juin au 9 septembre 2000. This monograph is a tribute to the prince of typographers, Giambatista Bodoni (1740-1813) whose genius is not only refelcted in the creating and drawing of typographical characters, but also in their engraving and founding. The authors indicate also less known aspects of his activities: his first experiences as a printer in Rome, the editorial adventure of the Cours d'Etude de Condillac, his passion for exotic types through countless manuals, the Greek, Latin and Italian classics, the English editions, illustrated works, scientific books, the imitators... Some of the prestigious provenances of these rare editions are reflected in the bindings.

SHIRLEY, Rodney
Courtiers and Cannibals, Angels and Amazons. The art of the decorative cartographic title-page 't Goy-Houten, HES & DE GRAAF Publishers BV, 2009. 24,5 x 29,5 cm. Clothbound with full colour dust jacket. Richly illustrated with many of the title pages presented full page and full colour. 272 pp
This book aims to preserve and bring forward for wider appreciation the outstanding works of art that many engraved title pages and frontispieces represent.
Over the time period covered by the present publication - roughly from the 1470s to the 1870s - very many printed books opened with an attractive decorative title page or frontispiece; sometimes both. In this book a limited selection has been made from the extremely wide field of known title pages, mainly by a focus on subject matter which is primarily cartography, geography, history and topography, together with associated disciplines such as astronomy, travel and exploration. A selection of 100 main and approx. 70 supplementary entries adequately covers specimens of different styles, formats, and national characteristics over a four-hundred year time period from the late 15th century onwards. The choice of decorative title pages or frontispieces includes examples emanating from Italy, Germany (including Switzerland and Austria), the Netherlands (including Flanders), France, Spain, England and some later examples published in the United States.
