COLIN, G. (editor)
Anshelmus Faust: Beschrijvinghe des boeckbinders handwerck. 1612|Prescription de la manicfacture des relieurs. 1612. Bruxelles, 1987. 4to. Cloth. Fully illustrated. 140 pp
This is the 'editio princeps' of the oldest bookbinders' manual. This French-Dutch bilingual manuscript, which is now in the collections of the Plantin Moretus Museum in Antwerp, was written by the German bookbinder Anshelmus Faust for the cistercian abbey of Saint-Bernhard, near Antwerp. The manuscript is preserved in a German-style dos-à-dos binding. Georges Colin comments on these kinds of binder's manuals, their recipies and techniques for e.g., the colouring and gilding of leather and parchment, the preparation of the colours, the binding techniques, etc. This volume also contains reproductions of both the original manuscript and its binding, in addition to annotated transcriptions of the French and Dutch texts and a transcription of the text in modern French.

CULOT, Paul
Le décor néo-classique des reliures françaises aux temps du Consulat, du Directoire et de l'Empire. Bruxelles, 4to. Cloth. Illustrated.
After a period of political difficulties, the french enjoyed a certain peace during the Consulate. Libraries and collections were founded by the new leaders of the regime and the newly established aristocracy. This distinguished clientèle found their way to the Parisian workshops. Some bookbinders such as Bisiaux an Teissier were already active during the Ancient Régime, while others started their activities then - e.g., the Bozerian brothers, Bradel l'aîné, Courteval, Doll, Lefebvre, Motet, Simier and Thouvenin. Although, little is known of the period 1790 to 1820, Paul Culot had succeeded in identifying 50 different workshops. Consequently, this provides an overview of the most important decorative elements used. In addiction to a significant introduction this volume contains the reproductions and descriptions of some 200 bindings, the reproductions of the bookbinders tickets, a dictionary of binders and workshops, and several indexes. Because of the information he adds to already known, badly, or completely unknown binders, Paul Culot's publication is the indispensable supplement to the works by Ramsden and Fléty. IN PREPARATION. Will be published in the series SBW (Studia Bibliotheca Wittockiana)

CULOT, Paul
Relieurs et reliures décorées en France à l'époque romantique. 103 ateliers en 210 reliures conservées à  la Bibliotheca Wittockiana. Bruxelles, 1995. 4to. Cloth. Fully illustrated. Color and black and white reproductions..
In France, the Romantic Movement was established by 1820. Book related art forms, i.e., typography, illustration and bookbinding, were part of this vast artistic realm. Bookbinders and gilders used beautiful materials and newly engraved tools, reflecting the contemporary artistic style. The collections of the Bibliotheca Wittockiana include more than 200 works bound in France between 1820 and 1855. The majority of these luxury bindings, mostly of which are signed, were realized in well-known Parisian workshops as well as in quite unknown provincial workshops. This volume contains the reproductions of 210 signed bindings and their descriptions, reproductions of all the bookbinders tikets, 25 colour illustrations, a dictionnary of 103 workshops, and several indexes. Because of the information he adds to already known, badly, or completely unknown binders, Paul Culot’s publication is the indispensable supplement to the works by Ramsden and Fléty.

This volume contains a large collection of articles on bibliophily, book collectors, early and contemporary bindings, the Livre d'artiste and the Livre-objet. It could be seen as an excellent illustration of Michel Wittock's personal views on "bibliophily", which are clearly not limited to bookbindings. His interpretation of bibliophily is characterized by public presentations and research into all aspects of antiquarian and contemporary books, such as paper, typography, illustration, books in contemporary art and book objects; his genuine interest in these related disciplines providing the driving force

REGEMORTER, Berthe van
Binding structures in the Middle Ages. A Selection of Studies by Berthe van Regemorter. Translated and annotated by Jane Greenfield. Bruxelles, 1993. 4to. Cloth. Illustrated. 384 pp
Berthe van Regemorter learned the craft of bookbinding in Brussels before joining the workshop of the famous British bookbinders Sangorsky and Sutcliffe. In 1923 she entered the Vrije Akademie in Antwerp as an instructor. A turning point in her carreer was Henry van de Velde's request to become a lecturer in his newly founded school of visual and decorative arts, La Cambre. But perhaps more important still is the fundamental role that Van Regemorter played in the development of the field 'bookbinding-archeology'. Thanks to her, the current popularity of this research results in the annual publication of several essays and articles. She also led the way in establishing a methodological structural analysis of bookbindings. This volume presents all the work of Berthe van Regemorter, commented and translated into English by Jane Greenfield. The follwing topics are treated: the structure of the binding from the origins of the codex, through Coptic, Armenian, Byzantine, Oriental and European bindings until the late Middle Ages.
