With extensive introduction in English. Een van de succesvolste beschrijvingen van Nederland werd in de 16e eeuw vervaardigd door de Italiaan Lodovico Guicciardini. Zijn Beschrijving van de Nederlanden' beleefde vooral in de 17e eeuw een ongeëvenaard groot aantal herdrukken. Het werk dat oorspronkelijk in het Italiaans geschreven was, werd door verschillende uitgevers in allerlei talen uitgegeven.Vooral de schitterende kaarten en prenten van steden in de Lage Landen waren populair. Guicciardini Illustratus geeft een overzicht van de verschillende edities die er sinds 1567 zijn verschenen. Matching pair of terrestrial and celestial globes, with a diameter of 26 inches (68 cm), with text in Latin. The terrestial globe is composed of 36 half gores and two polar calottes; the celestial globe of 24 ecliptical gores. The gores are pasted on a plaster sphere rotating on brass pinions within a brass meridian ring incised with a graduated scale. Each globe is set into a matching seventeenth-century Dutch wooden base with a small wooden compass-box mounted on the base-plate and with the horizon ring covered scales, almanac and calendar, etc..., engraved on paper and handcoloured as originally issued. In The World of a Seventeenth-Century Collector, Erlend de Groot describes the life and works of the Dutch lawyer Laurens van der Hem (1621-1678) as the collector and composer of the famous Atlas Blaeu-Van der Hem. He gives a unique insight in the relations of a collector and his decisions in collecting and composing his well-known 46 volumes copy of Blaeu's famous Atlas Major and placing the Atlas in its historical, cultural and artistic context.
De Groot describes the life and family of Van der Hem, followed by chapters about the prints and drawings and an historical survey. Furthermore the assembly of the atlas and the contents and arangements of the atlas are described. He completes his work with accounts of the history of collector's atlases in the Netherlands and the purpose and significance of the Atlas Blaeu-Van der Hem. The book is completed with a bibliography and indices of persons and of plates discussed in this work from the Atlas Blaeu-van der Hem.
